Disaster fair educates for safety readiness
Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake by doing something to help minimize the impact of the next big one. Sunnyvale's Department of Public Safety is sponsoring a Disaster Preparedness Fair on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Ave.
Information will be provided for preparing for a variety of situations, from a tornado to Y2K to earthquakes. The fair will also focus on four-legged residents, with tips on helping pets during one of nature's furies.
Attendees will also get a chance to literally taste disaster, with a Salvation Army feeding center serving the type of food that gets served at a disaster site.
A fire engine and an ambulance will be on display for kids, along with a clown and a rescue-dog demonstration. For information, call 408.730.7190.
Digital Clubhouse offers free computer classes
This season's free workshops at the Digital Clubhouse focusing on Internet skills and website design will be launched next week. The classes are still open for enrollment, with limited space available. The clubhouse is offering
KOW (Kids on the Web) classes to students in fourth to eighth grade, with preference given to students who do not have Internet access at home.
KOW I begins the week of Oct. 18, with classes offered on Monday and Thursday afternoons. A student selects either day to attend the classes, which run from 3 to 5 p.m. for three weeks. KOW II and III will follow later in the year.
The workshop is titled "Why We Are Special," and focuses on student family histories. Throughout the class, students review Internet skills and create a family website using scanning techniques, Photoshop and Page Mill techniques.

The Digital Clubhouse will also present a screening of short documentaries created by breast cancer survivors, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. The clubhouse is located in the Town Center Mall, on the first floor near Montgomery Ward.
Home-grown ceramics at annual pottery sale
Forty of Sunnyvale's artists will be selling their wares at the city's annual pottery sale, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department with the Creative Arts Center. The show will include raku, vases, masks, jewelry and sculpture, as well as functional pieces.
The sale will be held at the Creative Arts Center on Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is located in Sunnyvale's Community Center at 550 E. Remington Drive.
Fremont Foundation selects new members
The Fremont Union High Schools Foundation--serving Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook and Monta Vista high schools--appointed four new members to its. The foundation board raises additional money and support for school programs outside of the district's annual funding.
The new members are Lee Cunningham, Cheryl Karp, Richard Lowewnthal and Joyce Yee. Cunningham has served as a founding member of the Silicon Valley Joint Venture board of directors, is chair of the Foothill-DeAnza personnel commission, serves on the COMPAQ board for the Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the board of fellows of the University of Santa Clara.
Karp's involvements include vice president of health and welfare for the PTA sixth district and chair of health and welfare for the Fremont/Cupertino council. She has also served on numerous advisory/task force committees for the Cupertino Union School District.
Lowenthal serves on Cupertino's Parks and Recreation Commission, on the city's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and as a board member for Cupertino Community Services, among other appointments and volunteer positions.
Yee serves as the vice president of community concerns for the PTA sixth district, honorary service award chair for the Fremont/Cupertino PTA council, and co-chair of the Monta Vista High School board.
The foundation's annual "Partners in Lifelong Learning" dinner will be held on Oct. 20 at San Jose's Doubletree Hotel. The keynote speaker will be Becky Morgan. The event will also honor six outstanding students and orchardist Charlie Olson as its distinguished alumnus. For more information, call 408.566.9374.
