Mats net win over Mustangs

Fremont, Homestead football teams fall

By Dick Sparrer

Four matches could have gone either way, and the Monta Vista girls' tennis team was mighty glad that three of them went the Matadors' way when they battled Homestead in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last week.

Monta Vista nailed a 6-1 win over Homestead, but two of the matches went three sets and two others had sets decided on tiebreakers before Monta Vista players pulled out victories..

Liore Gelglum started the Matadors on the road to victory with a lopsided 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Liz Yu backed up that win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles.

But after that, things tightened up in singles action.

Cari Nicholson and Sunny Park battled through tough first sets at No. 3 singles before Nicholson clinched a 7-6 (7-4) win in a tiebreaker for the Matadors. Nicholson went on to take the second set 6-2.

Aileen Chen and Jenny Park fought it out through three sets at No. 4 singles before Monta Vista's Chen secured a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win.

MV's Amy Giver and Kelly Kang came through with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, but the action was more intense in the final two doubles battles.

Patty Chung and Stacey Kim won a thriller for Homestead at No. 2 doubles, taking Katherine Fustar and Calvina Cheng in three sets.

Football

Thursday is no night for football.

At least that's got to be what the Fremont football players are thinking this week.

The Firebirds had their regularly scheduled Friday night football game moved to Thursday last week because of Yom Kippur, but it turned out to be a bad night for football for Fremont.

The 'Birds dropped a lopsided 41-8 decision to Palo Alto, a club that's looking more and more every week like the favorite in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Fremont had to score in the fourth period to avoid getting shut out. Tully Banta-Cain blasted over from the 4 for a touchdown in the fourth, and Bryan McCann tossed to Gabe Atondo for the two-point conversion.

The loss left the Firebirds 4-1 for the year and 0-1 in division play. Fremont will be back in action on Oct. 17, 7:30 p.m., at Los Gatos. The Wildcats are 2-0 in the division (beating Monta Vista and Saratoga) after losing their first three games of the year.

Homestead lost 20-6 to Mountain View in a non-league game last week, but returns to De Anza Division play this week, facing Monta Vista on Oct. 17, 6:15 p.m., at Diesner Field. The Mustangs are 0-1 in the division and 1-4 for the year.

Jason Woods pulled in a 56-yard touchdown pass for Homestead's only score in the loss to the Spartans last week.

The clubs had played through a scoreless first half before the Spartans scored twice in the third and once more in the fourth to go up 20-0.

Girls' field hockey

Tricia Ignaitis scored a second-half goal, but the Homestead girls' field hockey team lost 3-1 to Live Oak in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League last week.

The Mustangs and Acorns had played to a scoreless tie through the first half, but Live Oak outscored Homestead 3-1 in the second half.

Homestead dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Willow Glen later in the week to slip to 3-4-1 for the year and to 0-2 in division play.

Fremont battled Westmont to a scoreless tie in its first game of the league season in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.

The Firebirds slipped to 0-1-1 in league play later in the week after losing 4-0 to Cupertino.
