Dons are winners

The De Anza Community College men's and women's soccer teams were each double winners in Coast Conference play last week.

Melissa Stankevich knocked in two goals to lead the Lady Dons to a 4-0 win over West Valley Community College. Tonia Kilby and Stacey Kandah also scored goals for the winners.

The Dons, now 3-0 in conference play and 5-1-2 for the year, had opened the week with a lopsided 7-0 win over Hartnell. Katie Wagner drilled two goals, and Stankevich added a goal and two assists. Kilby, Kandah, Wendy Wagner and Kara Grondzik also scored for the winners.

Meanwhile, Mike Joyce knocked home four goals in two games to lead the De Anza men to back-to-back victories.

Joyce drilled a pair of goals in a 3-0 victory over Los Positas, and he came back with two more in a 7-0 triumph over the City College of San Francisco.

The Dons are now 6-1 in conference play and 7-1 for the year.

Kings nails tie

The Kings Academy boys' soccer team battled North Valley to a 1-1 team thanks to a first-half goal by Andy Elwell.

The Knights had lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to Liberty Baptist to open the week despite a pair of goals by Joe Madrigal.

King's is now 1-2-1 in the Christian Private Schools League.

'Stangs, 'Birds fall

Brie Ahern posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, but the Homestead girls' tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Los Gatos in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Mustangs slipped to 2-6 in league and to 3-7 for the year when they lost 7-0 to unbeaten St. Francis later in the week.
