Remember to change smoke alarm batteries

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety and the International Association of Fire Chiefs remind Sunnyvale residents to change their smoke alarm batteries on Oct. 28, the same day that they change their clocks to standard time as part of the "Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries" campaign.

Changing smoke alarm batteries at least once a year is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce tragic deaths and injuries. Working smoke alarms nearly cut in half the risk of dying in a home fire. Additionally, the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends replacing your smoke alarm every 10 years.

Public safety also wants to remind residents to test smoke alarms by pushing the test button, plan two ways out of the house in the event of a fire, and practice those escape routes with the entire family. Families should also prepare a fire safety kit that includes working flashlights.

School board works to realign attendance areas

The Cupertino Union School District is accepting applications for its Middle School Attendance Task Force to help with a realignment of its middle school attendance areas and the anticipated opening of its fifth middle school for the 2004-'05 school year, which will affect those who attend school in Sunnyvale.

Community members residing within the district are invited to apply for the task force and will act as information liaisons between the task force and the community. One community member from each middle school quadrant (Cupertino, Hyde, Kennedy, Miller) will be selected, and applications must be returned by Oct. 26. Applications are available at the district office, located at 10301 Vista Drive in Cupertino.
