Glass stars, but Fremont drops two
By Dick Sparrer
Eric Fontes of Fremont is a front-runner.
That's not to say that he's jumping on the bandwagon to claim to be a backer of the New York Yankees for St. Louis Rams just because they are currently doing quite well.
No, it has nothing to do with Fontes' affiliation as a sports fan. But it has everything to do with his performance as a high school cross country runner.
Fontes is a front-runner on the cross country course, and he proved it again last week when he covered the 2.95-mile course at Crystal Springs in Belmont to finish 16th overall in the Crystal Springs Center Meet.
Fontes ran well to lead Fremont to a team eighth at the meet. Fontes finished 16th in 16:56.8 with Casey McCleary 32nd in 17:38.5, John Seo 52nd in 18:21.9, Robert Cooper 54th in 18:25.2 and Manuel Hernandez 60th in 18:38.5.
Fremont's Elaheh Sajadi finished 39th in 22:46.6 in the girls varsity race.
A week earlier on the 2.25-mile course at the Artichoke Invitational at Half Moon Bay, Fremont teams turned in solid performances running in the large school division.
Fontes came through with a solid effort, running 15th overall in 12:30. Hernandez supported by finishing 63rd to help the Firebirds to a team 13th.
Fremont's Chris Miguel was 14th in the freshman boys race in 14:23, and Sergio O'Connor finished 45th in 15:05 in the boys junior varsity class.
Fremont sophomore Kassy Korobkova was 58th in the girls frosh-soph division in 19:08 with Christine Su 62nd.
Firebirds fall
The Fremont girls volleyball team dropped a pair of decisions last week, but not because of a lack of effort on the part of Robin Glass.
The senior standout drilled 10 kills, but the Firebirds lost a 15-11, 15-9, 16-14 decision to Wilcox. Earlier in the week, 10 kills by Glass weren't enough in a 15-8, 15-8, 15-12 loss to Homestead.
The two losses dropped Fremont to 2-6 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Erin Withrow led the Mustangs to the win over the Firebirds with 15 kills. She came back with 13 kills later in the week to lead Homestead to a 15-9, 15-9, 15-7 win over Saratoga. The Mustangs are 6-2 in the division and 18-10 for the year.
In other action, the King's Academy pouned Mercy of Burlingame 15-7, 15-2, 15-3 to push to 3-4 in the Private Schools League. The Knights are 10-6 for the year.
King's falls
The King's Academy boys soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Fremont Christian last week. The Knights are now 2-4-1 in the Private Schools League standings and 3-9-1 for the year.
Koehler stars
Marlo Koehler won twice at No. 1 singles to lead the Fremont girls tennis team to a split in El Camino Division play last week.
Koehler posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 to start the Firebirds on the road to a 4-3 win over Santa Clara.
Elisabeth Enghofer supported with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles against the Bruins and Susanna Ho won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.
Linda Nguyen and Crystal Pangilinan teamed for a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles to help Fremont clinch the team win.
The Firebirds, 5-5 in league play, has lost a tough 4-3 nod to Wilcox to open the week. Koehler won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 for Fremont's only singles win in the match.
Angie Warriner and Yeran Yi combined for a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and Aysha Pamukeu and Christy Chang won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3.
