    No on Measure S

Some of us Sunnyvale residents are disturbed by the effort of Sunnyvale politicians to fluoridate the city water supply. You need to follow the money stream to understand the big push to put fluoride in city water systems. Sodium fluoride is a toxic-waste by-product of the fertilizer industry and is difficult to dispose of. A poor solution is to sell it to the cities to put into their water supplies.

Despite pressure from dental associations, 98 percent of Western Europe has rejected, banned, or stopped fluoridation due to environmental, health and ethical concerns.

Only about 5 percent of the world population is fluoridated and more than 50 percent of these people live in North America. The Danish Minister of the Environment recommended against fluoridation in 1977 because "no adequate studies had been carried out in its long-term effects on human organ systems other than teeth, and because not enough studies have been done on the effects of fluoride discharges on freshwater ecosystems."

The proponents of fluoridation say it's safe. However, if you observe all toothpaste boxes and/or tubes, both containing fluoride, you will find a "Warning." I have selected the warning from Colgate Fluoride Toothpaste:

WARNING: As with all fluoride toothpastes, keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional assistance or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Voters of the city of Sunnyvale should reject Measure S!
