    'Birds beat Mustangs--twice

    Placencia leads Fremont to win

    By Dick Sparrer

Fremont and Homestead battled it out in a couple of different arenas last week.

And the final result? Well, Fremont seemed to have Homestead's number.

The Firebirds downed the Mustangs 27-0 in a nonleague football game, and the 'Birds went five games to pull out a thrilling volleyball win over Homestead.

    Football

Senior quarterback Jason Placencia ran for one touchdown and threw two more to lead Fremont to its first football win over Homestead in the 1990s.

The Firebirds defeated the Mustangs for the first time in 10 years with the 27-0 win last Friday night.

Placencia pitched a 6-yard TD toss to Mark Aherns in the first period to give the Firebirds the early lead. Jorge O'Connor made it 7-0 with the first of his three extra-point kicks.

Placencia upped the lead to 14-0 in the second period with a 1-yard sneak for a TD, and that's how it remained through intermission.

The 'Birds scored again in the third when David Elliott ran in from the 2 and O'Connor converted.

Placencia, who hooked up on six of nine passes for 86 yards and two TDs, capped the scoring when he tossed a 28-yard scoring strike to Ahrens.

Ahrens had the two catches for 34 yards, and Elliott snagged four passes for 52. Elliott also gained 68 yards on the ground for Fremont.

Johnny Tona led the defensive effort for the Firebirds with an interception and a fumble recovery. His interception came with less than two minutes left in the game and helped Fremont seal the victory.

Fremont, now 2-4 for the year, returns to league play in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this week. The Firebirds will host Mountain View on Oct. 22, 7:30 p.m., at Diesner Field. Fremont is 0-2 in division play and the Spartans are 3-0 in league and 4-2 overall.

Homestead, meanwhile, will play host to De Anza Division leader Los Gatos on Oct. 21, 7:30 p.m., at Diesner Field. The Wildcats are 3-0 in the division and 6-0 for the year, and the Mustangs are 0-2 in division play and 2-4 for the season.

    Girls volleyball

Fremont pulled out a thrilling 15-13, 7-15, 16-14, 9-15, 15-10 win over Homestead on the volleyball court last week. Robin Glass drilled nine kills to lead the Firebirds to the exciting victory.

It was one of two five-game wins for Fremont last week. The Firebirds came back to down Wilcox 4-15, 15-12, 8-15, 16-14, 15-11 to improve to 2-6 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Amy Gorton buried 13 kills in the win.

Homestead ended up losing twice last week in El Camino play, falling to Fremont and losing 15-0, 15-9, 15-4 to unbeaten Saratoga. The Mustangs are now 3-5 in the division and 6-12 for the year.

In other area volleyball action, The King's Academy lost twice in the Christian Private Schools League, falling 11-15, 14-16, 15-11, 15-7, 15-1 to Pinewood and 15-11, 16-14, 15-10 to Redwood Christian. The Knights are now 0-4 in league play and 6-15 for the year.

    Soccer

The King's Academy boys soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Fremont Christian in league play last week. The Knights are now 2-4-1 in league play and 9-6-1 for the year.

    Hyrne leads Mustangs

Sharon Hyrne poured in 14 goals in three games to spark Homestead to a team third in the River Division of the Valley Christian Tournament last weekend.

Hyrne buried seven goals in an 18-1 win over Valley Christian in the third-place game. She had scored five in a 16-2 win over Lincoln and two in a tough 6-2 overtime loss to Hollister. Homestead also beat Monterey 11-5.

Hyrne was picked for the all-tournament team for her performance.
