Elementary school board nixes elections
By Kelly Wilkinson
The Sunnyvale Elementary School District's school board race, which is usually simultaneous with city elections, has been canceled this year because of a lack of candidates. Incumbent board president Jessica Lee and member Nancy Newkirk's seats are up for re-election, but because no one filed to run against them this summer, the district canceled the general election.
The school district includes eight elementary schools and two middle schools. The school board comprises five members who are elected to four-year terms.
Both Lee and Newkirk say the election cancellation can be viewed both positively and negatively.
"In the last election, there were five of us running for two seats," Lee says. "And without anyone running this year, that means [the board] is probably doing something our community approves of. But on the other hand, we're not able to be out there and raise awareness about schools."
They also point to their ability to continue work on several projects the board initiated in the past four years, such as a curriculum audit that will ensure alignment with high school standards.
"I feel it's really important to continue the synergy and practices that move the district forward," Newkirk says. "I really appreciate the confidence that the public shows in having us continue on as elected officials."
