Pair of Sox win honors
Frecceri, Garcia claim special awards
By Dick Sparrer
It was quite a summer season for the Sunnyvale White Sox, a Big League all-star team representing the Sunnyvale Southern Little League.
The Sox won the District 44 championship and went on to further success at the Section 5 tournament.
But the glory didn't end there for the Sunnyvale all-stars--or, at least, for two of them. The honors keep rolling in.
Jon Frecceri and Gabe Garcia, two key players for the Sunnyvale Big League team, won special honors this fall as students at St. Francis High School.
Frecceri won academic honors from the National Merit Scholarship competition, National Honors Society and California Scholarship Federation. Garcia was named president of the National Honors Society, was elected student body vice president and won a religious studies departmental award.
Frecceri and Garcia were each selected as junior class Scholar Athletes of the Year at St. Francis last year after helping the Lancers reach the Central Coast Section playoffs.
The two returned to the diamond in the summer as members of the White Sox.
Frecceri played first base for the Sox and won a secondstraight District 44 batting title. He is a two-time all-star in the district.
Garcia, the club's catcher and team captain, was the District 44 home-run champion and led the district in slugging percentage.
"These two young men are outstanding ballplayers and citizens," said White Sox coach Tim Frecceri. "I am lucky to be their coach, and proud to be one's dad."
