California bilingual program questioned

The current state-wide bilingual education program should be abolished and replaced by individual school districts creating their own programs, Assemblyman Jim Cunneen told the Cupertino Rotary Club last week.

Cunneen, R-Campbell, said he does not currently support the proposed ballot initiative that would eliminate bilingual education and require English only in public schools. The initiative is being considered for the June 1998 ballot.

What he does support is a bipartisan bill he co-sponsored that would allow each school district to make its own decisions about what sort of bilingual program to offer. The bill would continue current funding levels for bilingual education.
