National Semiconductor helps teachers get on Net
By Natasha Collins
Santa Clara County teachers will have a chance be trained to effectively use the Internet, thanks to a donation by National Semiconductor on Oct. 17.
National has established the Internet Innovator Awards to recognize and reward exceptional K-12 educators who integrate Internet technology into their curriculum. An outstanding teacher, or group of teachers, will be picked by the company each year and awarded $10,000 to be used at the teacher's discretion. The teacher's school will also be awarded $20,000 to fund schoolwide teacher training.
"Our goal is to reach as many teachers as possible, as quickly as possible, with the information, tools and resources they need to use the Internet in their classrooms," said National's chief executive officer Brian L. Halla. "This technology brings endless possibilities and excitement to learning."
Teachers in the Fremont High School District have been trained in how to use the Internet through the classes sponsored by National, Superintendent Joe Hamilton said.
"This is a wonderful thing that they are doing for the schools," Hamilton said. "The Internet is a key tool in the future of education. We need to train our teachers."
The company also plans to establish free interactive training on the Internet by next year. Teachers interested in applying for the Internet Innovator Award are encouraged to view National's Web site.
