Four candidates back municipal pool study
The Adult Swim Advisory Group met with four of the five candidates for Sunnyvale City Council last week to determine if they would support a legislative study on a new municipal pool. In two separate meetings, four of the candidates were able to meet with ASAG, and all agreed to support such a concept.
Additionally, while all felt that there was a world of difference between understanding the need for a pool and financing such a project, they were all in favor of the city's conducting a cost/benefit analysis. The candidates are Fred Fowler, Kayvan Navai, Julia Miller and Michael Szymanski.
Joe Martin did not respond to the meeting requests. Current Vice Mayor Jim Roberts is running for re-election unopposed.
The Adult Swim Advisory Group requested the meetings after the Parks and Recreation Department spent two years on an intensive study of the existing pool system. Their recommendation is that "short of capital improvements, there is nothing that the city can do to expand adult swim opportunities in Sunnyvale."
On July 29, the Adult Swim Advisory Group requested that just such a measure be taken by requesting that the City Council study the concept of a new, centrally located pool facility. The group also decided at that meeting to temporarily fund year-round usage of the Lakewood Pool for a period of two years. The Lakewood Pool is located just north of the Highway 101 and Lawrence Expressway interchange.
At a Dec. 11 meeting, the current City Council will decide what next year's council will tackle. Sunnyvale does this by compiling a "to do" list called the Legislative Issue Study List.

A story in the Oct. 8 issue of The Sun misidentified the ceremony in which Diane Timko was honored. The Sunnyvale Elementary District's Teacher of the Year was honored by the Santa Clara County Office of Education Oct. 6 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.
