Grondzik stars

Kara Grondzik popped home five goals in two games to lead the De Anza Community College women's soccer team to back-to-back Coast Conference wins over Gavilan and Foothill.

Grondzik hammered two goals and added an assist in a 7-0 win over Gavilan to open the week.

She came back with three goals, two of them off assists from Kelly McMicken and Dawnell Larsen (Fremont), in De Anza's 3-1 win over Foothill.

The Dons are now 9-0-1 in conference play and 11-0-1 for the year.

The De Anza men, meanwhile, won three games last week to improve to 12-0-1 in the conference. The Dons beat Chabot 7-0, West Valley 6-1 and Cabrillo 4-0.

In other sports action at De Anza last week, the women's volleyball team lost 15-10, 15-6, 17-15 to West Valley to slip to 1-3 for the year and to 0-1 in the conference, and the men's water polo team lost 20-8 to Foothill.

King's wins

The King's Academy girls' volleyball team improved to 6-0 in the Christian Private Schools League with a pair of wins last week.

The Knights pounded Liberty Baptist 15-9, 15-9, 15-2 in the battle of the league's two unbeaten teams, then they whipped St. Thomas More 15-6, 15-4, 15-2.

The Knights are 17-1 for the year.

The boys' soccer team at King's lost 2-1 to Liberty Baptist in another battle of the league leaders. The two teams took matching 4-0 league records into the game.

Ralph Madrigal scored a second-half goal off assists from Geordie Gordon and Jared Monroe, but it wasn't enough.

The Knights improved to 5-1 in the league later in the week with a 3-1 win over North Valley Baptist. Monroe, Gordon and Matt Bebb each scored goals and Madrigal and Guillermo Doro added assists for the winners.
