Fremont's Firebirds stick Westmont High
Heidi Gott knocked in a first-half goal to lift Fremont to a tight 1-0 win over Westmont in girls' first hockey action in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The win helped the Firebirds improve to 1-4 for the year.
Cupertino and Homestead, meanwhile, remained locked in the race for first place when they battled to a scoreless tie the same day. The Pioneers are now 3-0-5 for the year and Homestead is 3-0-2.
Dons win a pair
The De Anza Community College men's and women's soccer teams were each winners last week.
Kara Grondzik and Stacey Kandah each scored goals and Tonia Kilby passed out two assists to lead the Lady Dons to a 2-1 win over Ohlone. The Dons improved to 4-0 in the Coast Conference and to 6-1-2 for the year.
The De Anza men, meanwhile, jumped to 7-1 in conference play and to 8-1 overall with a 6-0 win over Cabrillo.
Allen TD not enough to beat Fresno team
The De Anza Community College football team dropped a tough 38-10 decision to Fresno City College. Roderick Allen scored the lone touchdown for the Dons.
De Anza, 1-3 after the loss, had edged Hartnell 15-8 a week earlier. Mike Lueckeman hit Edmund Bae (Homestead) on an 11-yard scoring toss, and went to Jeff Kool for eight yards and another score. Jon Hotchkiss (Leigh) ran for a two-point conversion and Dave Silverstein (Saratoga) kicked an extra point.
The Dons will visit the College of San Mateo on Oct. 26, 1 p.m.
King's wins two
The King's Academy girls' volleyball team rolled to a pair of wins last week to improve to 5-1 in the Christian Private Schools League.
The Knights whipped Mid Peninsula 15-3, 15-1, 15-0, then battled from behind to beat St. Lawrence Academy 7-15, 13-15, 15-7, 15-5, 15-12. King's is now 6-8 for the year.
The King's boys' soccer team, meanwhile, battled Mid Peninsula to a 1-1 tie. The Knights are 1-2-2 in league play.
