Football losses for Mustangs, Firebirds
By Dick Sparrer
Adrienne Hoopes of Homestead and Amy Gorton of Fremont each had big efforts last week, but with different results.
Hoopes and Gorton were each kill leaders for their respective volleyball teams last week, but the Mustangs came through with a win and a loss while the Firebirds lost twice in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Hoopes, a sophomore middle blocker for the Mustangs, buried 27 kills in two matches to lead Homestead to a split against Cupertino and Wilcox.
Hoopes drilled 13 kills in a tough 10-15, 15-7, 4-15, 15-5 loss to Cupertino, but came back with 14 kills in a win over Wilcox. The Mustangs pushed their record to 4-6 in the El Camino Division and to 7-13 for the year.
Fremont lost twice in El Camino play last week, despite the efforts of Gorton.
The senior outside hitter had 24 kills in two matches, but the Firebirds lost to unbeaten Saratoga and to second-place Cupertino.
Gorton and Robin Glass had seven kills apiece in Fremont's loss to the Falcons. Saratoga improved to 9-0 in the division with the win.
Gorton and Josie Wells drilled 17 kills apiece in Fremont's 16-18, 9-15, 15-12, 15-5, 15-6 loss to Cupertino. The Pioneers pushed their record to 9-1 in division play.
Fremont slipped to 2-8 in the division with the two losses.
Mustangs, 'Birds fall
Homestead and Fremont both lost in league football action last weekend.
The Mustangs gave first-place Los Gatos an early scare before dropping a 56-14 De Anza Division decision to the Wildcats on Thursday night at Fremont's Diesner Field.
Homestead jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first period against Gatos, but the Wildcats came back with a touchdown later in the first and then they scored four times in the second quarter to take command of the game.
Senior speedster Darrell Turner gave Homestead the quick lead with a 61-yard touchdown run in the first period. Senior quarterback Aaron Mansfield tossed to David Tucker for the two-point conversion to put the Mustangs up 8-0 early.
Homestead pulled off a successful onside kick to get the ball right back, and Mansfield made it hurt when he found junior Jaye Sumpter for 38 yards and a score. The two-point conversion attempt failed, but the Mustangs were still up 14-0 on the Cats.
The Wildcats, who had taken a 6-0 season record and 3-0 league mark into the game, had to regroup after the quick start by Homestead. And they did, scoring five touchdowns before intermission.
The Mustangs slipped to 2-5 for the year and to 0-3 in the division with the loss. Homestead will try to get back on the winning track and nail its first league win this week when the Mustangs visit Palo Alto on Oct. 29 for a 2:45 p.m. game.
Fremont, meanwhile, lost 33-6 to Mountain View in its return to El Camino Division play.
The Firebirds, who had beaten Homestead a week earlier in a nonleague game, returned to Diesner to challenge unbeaten Mountain View, and they were locked in a 6-6 tie with the Spartans after a period.
But Mountain View scored two second-quarter touchdowns and added scores in the third and fourth periods to cruise to the win.
Still, Fremont threw a scare into Mountain View when senior quarterback Mark Ahrens raced in from the 9 before the end of the first period to tie the game 6-6.
Fremont slipped to 0-3 in the division and to 2-5 for the year with the loss. The Firebirds will be on the road this week to take on Lynbrook on Oct. 29, 7:30 p.m., at Cupertino. The Vikings (1-3, 2-5) are coming off of their first league win, a 31-30 victory over Los Altos.
Seddiqui, Dunlap second
Daniel Seddiqui of Homestead and Celeste Dunlap of Cupertino each finished second at the St. Francis Invitational cross country meet at Foothill College last week.
Seddiqui covered the three-mile course in 16:23 to finish second in the boys division. Kevin Sweeney of Monta Vista raced to a ninth-place finish in 17:55 to lead the Matadors to a team title with a low 65 points.
Dunlap starred in the girls division, finishing second in 19:39.
King's falls
The King's Academy lost in boys soccer and girls volleyball action last week in the Christian Private Schools League.
The Knights dropped a 3-1 soccer decision to Sacred Heart Prep to slip to 2-5-1 in league play and to 9-7-1 for the year. Jarod Monroe scored the lone goal for King's in the loss.
The girls, meanwhile, dropped a tough 15-12, 2-15, 15-8, 8-15, 16-14 volleyball decision to Castilleja.
