Firebirds cheering for Mustangs, Matadors

There are two weeks remaining, and now it's all up to Homestead and Monta Vista.

The two clubs are the only for Cupertino and Fremont if either hopes to get a piece of the football championship in El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this fall.

Mountain View appears to be running away from the crowd. The Spartans crushed Lynbrook 48-12 last week to improve to 4-0 in the division and to 7-1 for the year. And it appears that with two weeks left to play in the regular season, only Fremont and Cupertino have a shot at catching the Spartans--and only then with some help from the Mustangs or Matadors.

Homestead and Monta Vista are Mountain View's final league opponents. A win by either one over the Spartans would open the door for the Firebirds or Pioneers.

But just one of them. Because the two clubs still have to play each another, and they'll do that on Nov. 10 at Fremont.

Fremont (3-1 in league and 4-4 overall) needs a win over Los Altos this week to stay alive in the league race. The Firebirds will visit LA on Nov. 3, 1:30 p.m.

Cupertino (4-1, 5-3) takes a break from league play this week, but will visit Santa Clara for a non-league game on Nov. 3, 1:30 p.m.

The Firebirds and Pioneers will collide on Nov. 10 with at the very least second place in the circuit at stake.

They're hoping for more, but they'll need help for that to happen.

Homestead will head to Mountain View on Nov. 2 and Monta Vista will visit the Spartans on Nov. 9 for a couple of 2:45 p.m. games. An upset in either of those games will open the day for the Fremont-Cupertino winner.

Homestead (3-2, 3-4) is coming off of a 41-20 win over Monta Vista (1-3, 2-6) last week. Will Faules raced for four touchdowns to lead the Mustangs to the win over the rival Matadors.

Faules rambled 35 yards for a touchdown to get Homestead on the scoreboard in the first quarter, then scored on a 1-yard run later in the period. Steven Nichols raced 23 yards for a TD later in the first, and after Brian Maihack's third extra point kick the Mustangs were up 21-0 in a hurry.

The Matadors scored before the half to cut the lead to 21-7, but Faules scored again in the third on a 35-yard run.

A 13-yard TD run by Craig Maynard and a 56-yard touchdown dash by Faules closed out the scoring and the win for the Mustangs.
