Late rally leads Fremont to win

Moulds, Van score four each for 'Birds

    By Dick Sparrer

It was a tight game heading into the final period, and the Fremont water polo team needed to do something big to insure a victory over Homestead.

Well, how big does a seven-goal outburst sound?

That's just what the Firebirds did to Homestead in the fourth quarter last week, and they rode that cushion to an impressive 12-4 win over the Mustangs.

The win helped Fremont improve to 3-2 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Michael Moulds and John Van poured in four goals apiece to lead the Firebirds to the win over the Mustangs. Adam Westgate pitched in three goals in the win and Ian Cable added one goal.

The clubs were locked in a 1-1 tie after a quarter before Fremont blanked Homestead 3-0 in the second period to lead 4-1 at intermission.

But the Mustangs topped the Firebirds 2-1 in the third and trailed just 5-3 heading into the fourth.

That's when Fremont went to work. The 'Birds outscored Homestead 7-1 to cruise to the lopsided victory.

Fremont will now prepare for the SCVAL tournament slated for Oct. 31-Nov. 4.

In girls play last week, Homestead edged Willow Glen 6-5 in a nonleague game before winning two of three games in the Lincoln Halloween Classic.

Sharon Hyrne scored three goals to lead the Mustangs to the win over the Rams to open the week.

Ali Desmond poured in eight goals in a 13-3 win over Pioneer in the first round of the Halloween Classic.

Homestead lost 5-0 to Mt. Pleasant a game later, but came back to beat local rival Cupertino 7-3. S. Hyrne tossed in three goals, Desmond hit two and Melissa Hyrne and Cindy Manning added one each.

    'Birds top Mustangs

It was just a nonleague football game, but that certainly didn't sour the sweetness of Fremont's 26-7 victory over Homestead last Friday night at Diesner Field.

Fremont, 1-3 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL, powered to the big win over the Mustangs, 0-3-1 in the De Anza Division. The victory helped the Firebirds improve to 2-6 for the year with just two games remaining.

Fremont will try to make it two straight when the 'Birds host Cupertino on Nov. 3, 7:30 p.m. The Pioneers are winless in five games in the division and are 1-7 for the year.

Homestead, now 2-5-1 for the season, will head to Cupertino on Nov. 3, 7:30 p.m., to take on Monta Vista in a De Anza Division game. The Matadors, 3-2 in the division and 5-3 overall, are still in the hunt for a playoff berth, despite a 30-7 loss to Wilcox last Friday.

    Hoopes, Glass star

Homestead upped its record to 10-2 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL with back-to-back girls volleyball wins over Gunn and Milpitas last week.

Adrienne Hoopes buried 15 kills to lead the Mustangs to a 15-6, 15-13, 15-12 win over Gunn, and she came back with seven kills in a 15-8, 15-5, 15-5 win over the Trojans.

The Mustangs are now 22-10 for the year.

Robin Glass hammered 10 kills, but Fremont lost a 15-9, 15-5, 15-9 El Camino decision to Gunn. The Firebirds had fallen 15-8, 15-5, 15-5 to Santa Clara earlier in the week, despite six kills by Glass.

Fremont is 2-10 in league play.

The King's Academy powered to a 15-5, 19-17, 15-12 win over Mercy of San Francisco in the Private Schools League. Suzanne DeBerry had six kills for the Knights in the win. King's is now 6-5 in league play and 16-9 for the year.

    Sardella wins

Austin Sardella of Fremont finished first in his division at the Artichoke Invitational held in October at Half Moon Bay High School.

Sardella was a winner in the boys freshman race in the large school division at the meet, covering the 2.25-mile course in 13:29.

"He ran an incredible race, passing the first two runners over the last 300 yards," said Fremont cross country coach Pat Lawson of Sardella.

Chris Miguel was 15th for the Firebirds in 14:23 with Joseph Seo 39th in 15:31.

There were 117 runners in the freshman field.

    King's falls

The King's Academy boys soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Woodside Priory last week to slip to 2-7-1 in the Private Schools League season.
