Ewert Road dedication

A perimeter road surrounding the San Jose International Airport was named in honor of Sunnyvale residents John and Peggy Ewert at a dedication ceremony Oct. 29.

The Ewerts--along with their children Thomas and Marcia, and family friend Jennifer Marion--lost their lives in a May 1997 plane crash shortly after takeoff from the Truckee-Tahoe Airport.

Sharon Sweeney, chair of the airport commission at San Jose International, remembered the couple as dedicated and popular members in aviation circles.

"Every time we needed help on any issue, they were just truly good people," Sweeney said.

The Ewerts were known for their missions of mercy for Angel Flight, an organization that flies patients in outlying areas to hospitals for critical operations.

Third-graders go up with Glenn

A group of third-graders from Vargas Elementary School are traveling alongside astronaut John Glenn--in name, at least.

The group was among 500,000 schoolchildren from around the nation who signed posters wishing good luck and "Godspeed" to the crew of STS-95, who brought along the posters for the mission on CD-Rom.

The Vargas third-graders visited

Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space to witness the launch.

Census Helpers Needed

Members from the community are being sought to fill the Sunnyvale Census 2000 Community Outreach Committee.

The goal of the committee is to raise awareness and motivate members of the community to participate in the census, particularly those that have traditionally not been well-represented.

The committee will convene in March and continue meeting through January 2000.

A recruitment meeting will be held Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. in the West Conference Room in City Hall. For an application or to learn more about the recruitment process, call the Sunnyvale Volunteer Services at 730-7533.

For more information on the Census 2000 Community Outreach Committee, contact Bing Rong Shan at 730-7431.
