Mustangs run to win
Sophomore standout Matt Hovik sparked the Homestead boys' cross-country team to a 24-31 nonleague win over Gunn last week when he finished second overall in 11:36 on the 2.17-mile course at Gunn.
Dan Seddiqui finished fourth overall in 11:49 and Darius Seddiqui was fifth in 11:50 for the Mustangs.
The Homestead girls lost to the Titans. The Mustangs fielded an incomplete team for the race.
Contreras places
Emily Contreras raced over Newark's 3.0-mile Coyote Hills course in 22:16 to finish fourth overall and lead the De Anza Community College women's cross-country team to a tight 27-28 Coast Conference win over Las Positas.
The De Anza men lost 24-32 to San José City College and 22-33 to Cabrillo the same day.
In other sports action at De Anza, Stacey Kandah knocked in three goals to lead the women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Hartnell. The Dons are now 9-0 in the Coast Conference and 11-1-2 for the year.
Kandah, Tonia Kilby and Wendy Wagner each scored first-half goals to lead the Dons to a 5-0 win over Foothill earlier in the week.
The De Anza men split last week, falling 2-1 to Cañada before beating Chabot 4-0. The Dons are now 11-2 in conference play and 12-2 for the year.
Elwell leads Knights
Andy Elwell knocked in a pair of goals to lead the King's Academy boys' soccer team to a 3-2 win over North Valley Baptist last week. But the Knights slipped to 2-6-2 in the Christian Private Schools League later in the week when they lost a 2-1 decision to Mid-Peninsula.
