    El Camino costume store burglarized

A costume store on E. El Camino Avenue was burglarized Oct. 25. The owner said the office situated in the back of the store was broken into and the bank deposit was taken. The store was established nine years ago, and there have been occasional shoplifting incidences, but this time only money was taken, according to the owner.

According to Byron Pipkin, public information officer of the public safety department, a blue bag containing $2,000 in cash and $1,000 in checks was taken from the office of the store. There are no suspects and Pipkin said they are checking around with the neighboring stores and looking into dumpsters to find clues.

City recognizes its own 'rising stars'

On Nov. 1, the city of Sunnyvale and the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce honored the Sunnyvale companies recognized as part of the "Silicon Valley Technology Fast 50," "Top 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies," and "Entrepreneur of the Year" programs.

Representatives of these companies were recognized at a lunch hosted by the city and the Chamber of Commerce on Nov. 1. Sunnyvale Mayor Jack Walker and Chamber Chairman Ray Montalvo presented each firm with an award.

Dinner and auction raises some money

On Oct. 25, the "Cheap as Dirt Black

Tie Dinner Dance and Auction" raised more than $27,000 for the Sunnyvale School District Education Foundation. Held at the Del Monte Building, the event included dinner, dancing and an art auction. About 200 people, including, honorary chairwoman, Assemblywoman Elaine Alquist and all seven Sunnyvale City Council members attended the event.

Yolanda Brown, vice president of the foundation board, said that in the past the art auctions that they organized only raised about $2,000. This year they decided to have everything donated, including dinner, wine and the art and they set the admission price at $50 per person.

"We wanted to take the foundation to a new level this year," Brown said.

Proceeds from the event will be used toward educational projects like a reading program or literacy program for seniors or children belonging to the Sunnyvale School District.
