Temp agency bilked out of more than $100,000

Police say seven suspects used loopholes in company's system

    By Daniel Hindin

Seven suspects are under investigation for a suspected scam against the West Valley Staffing temporary agency. The Sunnyvale temp agency lost $122,239.14 since the end of last year because of falsified timecards.

The suspects worked for six different companies around the Bay Area: George Lithograph, CDS Leopold, LGC Wireless, Diamond Multi-Media, Webvan Group and Applied Materials.

After their employment ended, the suspects continued to submit timecards to West Valley Staffing for hours that they didn't work at each of the companies. West Valley Staffing paid them for all the hours and billed the respective companies. The companies then paid West Valley Staffing for those unworked hours.

Reports say suspects had payoffs ranging from $3,271.42 to $42,848.00.

The alleged scams occurred between Dec. 23, 1999 and Oct. 15, 2000. At 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 19, the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department received a report about the incidents. West Valley Staffing reimbursed the other companies for their losses, and is currently absorbing the major loss in funds. The case remains under investigation by Sunnyvale police.

West Valley Staffing and each of the companies declined to comment on the situation.

Sunnyvale Police Spokesman Captain Chuck Eaneff says, "West Valley Staffing is split into two different sections--staffing and payment. There was just a big miscommunication between the two sections. People really look for loopholes to make money, and the rate of white-collar crime is pretty high around here. Once people find those sorts of loopholes, they'll going back to it."
