City forum on noise abatement set for Nov. 24

A public forum on the issue of noise in Sunnyvale and its regulation and enforcement will be held on Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. in the City Council chambers.

As promised by council, the forum will be televised live on Channel 18, KSUN.

"This forum will be an opportunity for our residents and businesses to express their opinions about neighborhood noise and how we regulate it," said Dyane Matas, manager of Sunnyvale's neighborhood preservation program.

"We also hope to learn new information and ideas about the possible methods the city might use to reduce noise caused by various sources such as small engines and equipment like lawn mowers, leaf blowers and power tools."

The forum is one element of a study to reexamine the city's noise ordinance.

The study will be completed and presented to council in February.

For more information on the study, call 408/730-7610.

Recycling fair

A fair to celebrate America Recycles Day will take place at the Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer Station (SMaRT) Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The cities of Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and Palo Alto will all be recognized

by the California Waste Management Board for decreasing waste going to landfills by 50 percent before the year 2000.

The SMaRT Station was built in 1993 and is operated by the city of Sunnyvale on behalf of all three cities.

Along with activities for children, home composting demonstrations, and displays of new products, a drawing for a three-bedroom "American Green Dream House" will be held. The home is constructed from recycled-content materials.

For more information about the event, contact the city of Sunnyvale Recycling Program at 730-7262.
