Girmay Guangul and Dawit Gezahgn have been battling it out on the cross country trails of the area all season long.

And it was no different last Saturday when the two runners went head-to-head in the Central Coast Section Division II finals.

The results weren't much different either.

Santa Clara's Guangul has had the edge on Del Mar's Gezahgn most of the year, and it was more of the same at the finals.

Guangul won the division title in 15:21 on the 2.95-mile course at Crystal Springs in Belmont with Gezahgn a close second in 15:24.

But Gezahgn and his Dons were able to finish ahead of Guangul and the Bruins in the team standings. Del Mar nailed fourth in the division with 124 points behind St. Ignatius, Leland and Wilcox.

Dennis Bekele was seventh in 16:07 with Carlos Melchor 24th in 17:10, Chris O'Neal 28th in 17:20 and Richard Martinez 78th in 19:17 to round out the top five for the Dons.

Fremont's Mike Pullano and Eric Fontes each finished in the top 20 in the division. Pullano was 12th in 16:43 for the Firebirds with Fontes 18th in 16:56.

Fremont ended up sixth in the team standings with Manuel Hernandez 46th in 17:50, Philip Mandelstamm 51st in 18:02 and Casey McCleary 68th in 18:38.

Celeste Dunlap of Cupertino finished third overall and third in the girls Division III race at the CCS finals.

The Cupertino senior stopped the clock at 18:53 to finish third in the fastest girls division in the section meet.

Cupertino sophomore Amy Wong was 15th in 20:04.

In girls Division II, Laura Kniskern of Prospect and Racheal Fredrickson of Homestead landed spots in the top 20.

Kniskern was 12th in 20:21 for the Panthers and Fredrickson was 17th in 20:58 for the Mustangs.

Ally Young was 22nd in 25:36 to lead the effort for The King's Academy in girls Division V action. Andrea Plume was 30th in 27:07 with Roxy Stahl 33rd in 30:14, Natasha Chatilo 34th in 31:33 and April Castillo 37th in 32:58.

In boys Division V, Jordan Boye of The King's Academy ran among the top 25 finishers, nailing 25th in 18:43 for the Knights.

    Mats, Vikes win

The Monta Vista and Lynbrook girls volleyball teams each opened CCS play with wins last week while Cupertino lost its opener.

The Matadors knocked off Hollister 15-4, 15-8, 15-8 behind Heather Janssen's 17 kills. The Mats, now 20-11 for the year, move on to play Presentation (33-3) in the CCS Division I semifinals on Nov. 18, 8 p.m., at Santa Clara High School. The winner will advance to the championship match on Saturday, 7 p.m., at West Valley Community College.

Lynbrook, meanwhile, beat Santa Clara 16-14, 15-1, 15-3 in CCS Division II play last week. The Vikings, 26-15 for the year, were led by Tessa Sphar, who had 16 kills.

The Vikes will play in the semifinals on Nov. 17, 6 p.m., at Leland against South San Francisco. The winner moves into the title match on Nov. 19, 8 p.m., at West Valley.

Cupertino dropped its CCS Division III opening round match to St. Ignatius 15-5, 15-5, 15-17, 15-4. The Pioneers ended the year at 25-6.

    Firebirds, Mustangs fall

Both the Fremont and Homestead football teams ended the season with losses last weekend.

The Firebirds were pounded 38-0 by Gunn to wrap up the year with a 4-6 record and a 2-4 mark in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Homestead, meanwhile, lost 42-22 to playoff-bound Milpitas. The Mustangs finished the year 3-7 and were 1-5 in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.
