Aggressive pit bulls should be euthanized

I was heartened to read your article on the bite club. It looks to me like the Sunnyvale Public Safety is finally taking notice of pit bulls fighting and the drugs and gangs involved. What a difference 15 months can make. On August 4, 1998, my Labrador was attacked on a north Sunnyvale street by a pit bull that bolted out of a front door. My dog was being walked by a professional dog walker. I was out of town at the time. My dog suffered multiple bite wounds to the throat and had a 2 by 3 inch piece of muscle torn from her left shoulder. My lab needed surgery to close her wounds. She also received multiple antibiotics for infection.

Upon my return, I received a bill for $250 from the vet. I obtained a copy of the public safety report. The owner of the dog was issued a citation for having unlicensed and unvaccinated dogs. This household contained two pit bulls and a rottweiler. I was told Public Safety would not take custody of this dog. At the time, I pointed out that this household was only two blocks from an elementary school and that small children walked by this house all the time.

I sold my home of 20 years shortly after this. I now live in another Sunnyvale neighborhood with lots of Labradors, golden retrievers, and not a pit bull in sight. The household with the pit bulls has moved also, but I, for one, will not be surprised if I read about them in the paper.

The citizens of Sunnyvale should sit up and take notice before we have an incident with a pit bull and a small child. I feel our municipal code should be amended to require all pit bulls to be neutered. In addition, if the dogs are picked up of reported for any violation, I feel they should be tested for aggression. If they don't pass, they should be euthanized. Harsh, you bet.

My Labrador still bears the scars from her encounter with that pit bull. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up whenever I see one. I do hope that the district attorney sinks his teeth into the individuals arrested for dog fighting before more innocent victims are harmed.
