'Golf for math' was a hole in one for CEEF

Thanks to a novel "golfing for math" concept that has drawn the interest of the corporate and business community, the Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation's annual fall golf tournament netted $40,000 in support of the mathematics program in the Cupertino Union School District.

CEEF president Steve Andrews said proceeds from the tournament, held at the Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club, brought the total amount in the foundation's two-year fundraising effort on behalf of the district math program to $154,000.

The funds came primarily through CEEF-generated grants from corporations and other foundations, although proceeds from the 1995 golf tourney also benefited the program, which combines basic skills acquisition with higher "thinking" mathematics for all students.

The tournament, which drew a full field of 144 golfers, was followed by an awards dinner and auction at 3Com corporate headquarters in Santa Clara. The dinner was catered and underwritten by the Outback Steakhouse. Major support came from the Regis and Dianne McKenna Family Foundation, with additional funding provided by corporate and business sponsors, including Sobrato Development Com-panies, Hewlett-Packard, Tandem Computers, McWhorter's stationers, Kelling Northcross and Nobriga, and the Smith Barney Consulting Group.

KRON-TV sports figure Vernon Glenn participated in the tournament and served as auctioneer. Highlights included the second annual City Cup competition among the six cities served by the 15,000-student elementary district, this year won by the city of San Jose team, and the first Corporate Challenge Cup for teams representing corporate sponsors, won by a foursome from McWhorter's. Tournament chairs were Mike Masunaga and Linda Walker.
