No rezoning study for Mary Manor
The City Council voted 4-3 not to study rezoning the southwest corner of Mary and Washington avenues from commercial to low-medium-density housing.
Councilmembers Robin Parker, Manuel Valerio and Pat Vorreiter voted to go forward with a study.
The city received a request from Classic Communities Inc. to initiate a study to reclassify the four-acre parcel so the developer could build single- family homes where a shopping center now stands.
Yet Councilmember Stan Kawczynski said the city should stick to its current plan.
"We need to maintain neighborhood shopping centers so people can walk or bike to do their business and not always have to get in their cars and drive across town," he said.
Class Communities contended that the shopping center has vacancies: Its anchor store, Mary Manor Market, vacated two years ago, and the space is still empty.
Parade planned
The Lakewood Village Neighborhood Association will hold its annual holiday parade Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. The parade will begin at Lakewood School, cross Lawrence Expressway and end its march at Fairwood School. Following the parade, a holiday social will be held at Fairwood Park.
Some of the parade groups will include Bell Swings, Air National Guard, Mission College, Twisters Gym, American Civil War Association, Great American Towing and Fremont High School's marching band. The LVNA is still looking for more groups to participate. Call Nan Dorio at 736-7213.
