King's Academy boys qualify for state meet

There were a number of division champions crowned at the Central Coast Section cross country finals Nov. 10 at Crystal Springs in Belmont.
There were boys and girls champs in CCS Division I, there were boys and girls champs in CCS Division II ... and so forth and so on, right through Division V.
But when you're talking about champions, throw out the divisions when the name Melissa Grelli of Presentation comes up. Because Grelli didn't just win the CCS Division III title ... she won it all.
Grelli ran ahead of the field to win the CCS overall crown. The sophomore covered the 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course in 17:31 to finish 10 seconds ahead of her nearest rival, Michelle Gallagher of Sacred Heart Cathedral, who coincidentally also competed in Division III.
Grelli and Gallagher will both be back on the trails this weekend when the top runners from the section advance to the state championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Grelli and Gallagher will battle it out with the rest of the girls in the Division III field when the starting gun blasts at 11:45 a.m. Saturday. In all, there will be 10 different races for boys and girls with runs beginning from 8:30 a.m. to 1:25 p.m.
Will Kraemer joins Grelli as a top competitor from CCS running at state.
The senior led the Saratoga boys to a second-place finish in the CCS Division III race. Kraemer became the first individual runner in school history to win a section title when he ran 15:23 to take the division and finish second in the overall field to Brett Gotcher of Aptos (14:56).
The Falcons qualified as a team for the state meet, and Kraemer will lead Saratoga into the competition this week in Fresno. David La (12th in 16:27 at CCS), Brett Stanger (13th in 16:29), Trevor Adams (24th in 16:51), Richard La (28th in 16:58), Don Prolo (76th in 18:22) and Justin Gardner (82nd in 18:34) will join Kraemer at the state meet.
The boys of the King's Academy qualified as a team for the state meet after placing second in CCS Division V.
Junior Nathan Condie led the Knights to the runner-up finish in the team standings by finishing first overall in the individual field. Condie ran 16:54 to win the Division V title with teammate Coren Pappu finishing third in 17:13.
Condie and Pappu will lead the contingent from the Sunnyvale school to Fresno for the state meet this weekend. Joining the duo will be freshman J.T. Martin (13th at CCS in 18:12), sophomore James Grantham (15th in 18:21), senior Ezra Pierce (33rd in 20:01), soph Tyson Kornely (43rd in 21:02) and junior John Corstorphine (44th in 21:07).
King's in Semifinals
The King's Academy girls volleyball team advanced to the CCS Division V semifinals, but lost a four-game decision to Redwood Christian to fall out of the tournament.
The Knights fell behind 2-0 when they lost the first two games 15-11, 15-8, but they rallied for a 15-11 win in game three. Redwood pulled out the win, though, with a 15-3 victory a game later to take the match.
The loss left King's 18-17 for the year. Among the top players for the Knights this season were Annie Favero, Jesse Martin, Dani Luna and Andrea Swanson.
'Stangs in Doubles Tourney
Homestead's Brittany Reynolds and Erin Hsu earned a place in the CCS tennis finals scheduled for this week at the Courtside Tennis Club.
Reynolds and Hsu qualified as a doubles team and were to open play on Monday at the Courtside Tennis Club against Jessy Tseng and Dory Gannes of Palo Alto. The winning team was to advance to the quarter-final round later that day. The semifinals and finals are set for Nov. 20 at Courtside.
