Pua, Monta Vista pair in CCS tennis

    By Dick Sparrer

Rachel Pua of Homestead lost to Belinda Rungsea of Lynbrook the first time the two tennis players met in a league match this season.

She wasn't about to let it happen again.

Pua came back to defeat the talented Rungsea when they met a second time during the league campaign, then she defeated Rungsea again when the two met to decide the singles championship in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Pua's first win over Rungsea helped Homestead clinch a division championship; the second win helped Pua clinch a division singles crown.

Pua, a 6-0, 6-2 winner over a Wilcox foe in the semifinals, turned back Rungsea 6-2, 6-0 in the title match to claim the singles top spot and a berth in the Central Coast Section tournament.

Rungsea had posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over a Milpitas opponent in the league semifinals.

Two Homestead doubles teams placed in the top four in the division finals, but neither team finished high enough to advance to CCS.

Diana Chiu and Mia Chen teamed for a 7-6, 7-6 win over Santa Clara in the semifinals before losing a 7-5, 7-6 heartbreaker to Wilcox to finish second in the league tournament.

Erin Hsu and Niki Delanney lost a tough 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 decision in the semifinals to slip into the third-place match. They lost there 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 to settle for fourth in the league.

The Monta Vista pair of Liora Gelblum and Liz Yu played well enough at the De Anza Division finals to win a title and advance to the CCS play.

Gelblum and Yu blanked a Los Gatos duo 6-0, 6-0 in the tourney quarterfinals, then handled teams from St. Francis in the semifinals (7-5, 6-0) and finals (6-0, 6-0) to win the title.

Pua was to open in singles play and Gelblum and Yu in doubles play in the CCS girls tennis tournament that was to begin Monday at Courtside in Los Gatos, weather permitting.

    Dunlap runs at state

Celeste Dunlap of Cupertino will be in the running at the state high school cross country championships at Woodward Park in Fresno on Nov. 27.

Dunlap earned her place in the state meet by placing third overall in the CCS Division III girls championships on Nov. 13 at Crystal Springs in Belmont. Dunlap was third in 18:53 on the 2.95-mile course.

    Matadors fall

The Monta Vista boys water polo team dropped a 15-5 decision to Leland to fall out of the CCS Division I tournament.

Chris Bruner and Sean Azarenok tossed in two goals apiece, but the Matadors came up short against the Chargers.

The loss left Monta Vista witha 20-10 record for the year.
