Swimmers in international event
Ooo, la-la!
The Sunnyvale Swim Club has a trip planned for the summer of 1999, but this is no ordinary summer road trip.
The local club has been selected by United States Swimming to compete in an international swim meet in Paris, France, and Barcelona, Spain.
Sunnyvale will be one of five teams from across the United States to travel to Europe next summer to train and compete with national teams from other countries.
The Sunnyvale club will send 30 athletes, two coaches and six chaperones on the international trip. The team will leave July 31 and arrive in Paris the following day. The team will train at the French Olympic Training Center, then will compete in a USA-France meet.
The club will travel by train to Barcelona and train at the site of the 1992 Olympic Games before competing in a USA-Spain dual meet.
The trip will conclude with an awards banquet in Spain. Athletes who demonstrate the most international goodwill, team sprit and competitiveness will receive awards.
The Sunnyvale Swim Club is sponsored by the City of Sunnyvale and trains at the Sunnyvale Middle School Aquatic Center. The team consists of swimmers ages 5-25.
