Council elects Roberts as city's new mayor
By Natasha Collins
The Sunnyvale City Council Nov. 18 unanimously elected Councilman Jim Roberts mayor. Councilman Manuel Valerio was elected vice mayor. Both men were born and raised in Sunnyvale.
For Roberts, becoming mayor was a lifelong goal and had special meaning for him.
"Forty-four years ago my grandfather was mayor of Sunnyvale," he said. "To have my picture on the wall, as mayor, next to his is a great honor."
New members Fred Fowler and Julia Miller joined the council on the same night, while longtime members Robin Parker and Landon Curt Noll stepped down.
Fowler saw his swearing in to the council as a turning point for him. "It is the end of a long road and the beginning of another. I am looking forward to participating in the decision-making process and being on the council," he said.
