Sports grants

The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame will continue in its tradition of supporting youth sports by offering grants to youth sports organizations through its BASHOF Youth Fund.

The grants are for purchasing sports equipment. Applications must be completed and returned by Dec. 31.

The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame has provided over $1,325,000 to youth sports organizations in the nine counties of the Bay Area. For more information, call 1-415-352-8835.

Dons split in playoffs

The De Anza Community College men's and women's soccer teams had different results in the second round of the state playoffs.

The De Anza men pulled out a 3-1 win over Skyline to advance in the play-offs. The Dons are a lofty 22-2 for the year.

The Lady Dons, however, lost a 2-0 heartbreaker to Ohlone to see their season come to a crashing end. The Dons finished the year 19-2-1.

Dons lose

Mike Lueckeman tossed a pair of touchdown passes, but the De Anza Community College football team dropped a 31-12 decision to powerful Cabrillo.

The loss left the Dons 0-5 in the Coast Conference and 2-8 for the year. The Seahawks were 4-1 in the conference and 9-1 for the year.

Youth basketball

Sign-ups are now being accepted from boys and girls in the first through eighth grades interested in playing youth basketball this winter.

Players must either live in Sunnyvale or attend Sunnyvale school to be eligible. League play begins in January and the cost is $64 per player.

YMCA basketball

The Northwest YMCA is holding sign-ups for the winter youth basketball league season. The league is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through the eighth grade.

The league features instruction in basic fundamentals. There are no scores or standings kept, and every player is guaranteed to play one full half per game.

League play begins Jan. 17, and the registration deadline is Jan. 9. Games are played on Saturdays, and there is one weeknight practice per week.

The cost is $70 per player, and a $20 YMCA membership is required. For more information, call Matt Klock at 257-7160, ext. 19.
