Gov. Davis awards large grant to NOVA Workforce
Gov. Gray Davis awarded the NOVA Workforce Board a job-training grant of $38.9 million to provide employment and training services to dislocated workers in Silicon Valley.
"These funds will allow local communities to provide needed assistance to those who have lost their jobs to find new employment," Davis said. "These are hard-working, highly skilled workers. I want to put their talents to work as quickly as possible."
This grant is the 11th in a series of annual funding authorized by the state of California.
The city of Sunnyvale administers NOVA's programs on behalf of a seven-city consortium of Cupertino, Los Altos, Milpitas, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale. NOVA's services are free to eligible individuals who have been part of a company layoff or closure and are in need of re-employment services. For more information, contact NOVA at 408.730.7232 or visit its website at www.novaworks.org.
Community Players need public's help
Because of a decline in membership and attendance, Community Players (SCP) is seeking help from the community. SCP is a nonprofit organization that has been providing theater for the Sunnyvale community for more than 31 years. Each year SCP produces four or five shows that draw cast, crew, backstage volunteers and audience members from a
wide range of local communities. These productions use the talents of more than 300 cast, crew, staff and orchestra members and will entertain an expected audience in excess of 8,000.
SCP has openings on their board of directors, and volunteer opportunities are available in many areas.
SCP can be contacted at P.O. Box 60399, Sunnyvale, CA 94088, or via email at scp-board@sunnyvaleplayers.org or through their website at www.sunnyvaleplayers.org.
