Dons open with wins

The De Anza Community College women's soccer team opened the state community college playoffs a pair of tight wins over Santa Rosa and Ohlone.

Stacey Kandah scored in the 89th off a Michelle McTighe assist to spark the Dons to the close 1-0 victory over Santa Rosa, and the Dons won 7-6 on penalty kicks to pull out a close win after battling Ohlone to a scoreless tie in regulation.

The wins left De Anza 17-2-2 for the year.

The De Anza men's soccer team also won on penalty kicks in the state quarterfinals, beat Cañada 5-4 after tying 2-2 in regulation. Goals by Ross Touli and Scott Buss helped the Dons to the 2-2 tie to force the penalty-kick decision.

The Dons are 18-2-1 for the year.

De Anza slam-dunks

In other sports action at De Anza, the women's basketball team put together back-to-back wins, beating Contra Costa Community College 58-44 and Sacramento City College 78-56. The Lady Dons are now 6-1 in the young season.

The De Anza men, meanwhile, slipped to 2-3 for the year after losing an 86-63 decision to Cañada.
