Fremont loses a pair at Westmont Invite

It took three wins to win the championship in the Cupertino Shootout, and it was Andrew Hill winning three straight games to claim the title in the boys basketball tournament.

But two wins wasn't bad, and three of the eight teams in the tourney managed to win a pair of games to finish strong in the three-day event.

American High won a pair of games, but lost 42-26 to Hill to finish second in the tournament.

Saratoga split its first two games, but won its third to clinch third place in the tourney, and Lynbrook did the same, claiming the consolation crown.

Hill's Derek Alcantara and Jason Obazuaye were named to the all-tournament team along with Darryl Crowder of American. Justin Zebb represented Saratoga on the all-tourney squad and Lynbrook's Justin Flood rounded out the list.

Timing proved the only difference for Saratoga and Lynbrook in the weekend event.

The Falcons beat host Cupertino 37-31 in their opener, but lost 56-45 to American a game later. Saratoga battled back with a 55-51 win over Homestead to finish third.

Lynbrook, meanwhile, lost 59-49 to Hill in its opener to slip in the consolation bracket. The Vikings beat Lincoln 59-56 to advance to the consolation title game, then beat Monta Vista 50-37.

    Mustangs fourth

Zebb poured in 16 points to lead Saratoga to the four-point win over Homestead in the third-place game. The junior was joined in double figures by Daniel Ruby, who supported with 12 points in the win.

Garren Strong led all Homestead scorers with 16 points in the loss and Brad Sasaki tossed in 14 points.

Randy Chang added seven points for the Mustangs and Taylor Carpenter and Ramont Thomas had six apiece. John McGaughlin hit two.

Homestead had opened the tournament with a 56-54 win over Lincoln. Strong led the way with 19 points for the Mustangs. Sasaki had two three-pointers among his 13 points and Carpenter added 12 points. Thomas tossed in nine points and Chang had three.

The Mustangs fell 50-38 to eventual champ Andrew Hill in the second round.

Sasaki buried a pair of threes on his way to an 11-point night and Strong tossed in 10 points. Bryan Silverman chipped in with six points, McGaughlin four, Thomas three, Chang two and Carpenter and Steve Vanderet one apiece.

    Fremont falls

Bill Gerth couldn't have asked for a better finish to the 34th annual Westmont Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Oh, maybe in his role as Westmont head coach he could have hoped for a championship for his Warriors. But as the tournament director, the finish couldn't have been any better or more exciting has Gerth planned it.

All three games on the final day of the tournament were thrillers with each of three ultimately decided by a single basket.

Del Mar won the championship with a thrilling 47-45 victory over Los Gatos; host Westmont clinched third place with a tight 54-52 win over Piedmont Hills; and Prospect took the consolation title with a hard-earned 36-34 win over Pioneer.

But Fremont wasn't around for the final day of the tournament. The Firebirds lost two straight to open the event, losing 61-49 to eventual champion Del Mar and 49-42 to Pioneer.

Troy Tulowitzki tossed in 12 points and Matt Phelps added 10, but the Firebirds lost by seven to the Mustangs in the second round of the tournament. Jesse Enchill supported with seven points and Jacob Esau hit six.

A game earlier, Tulowitzki had pumped in 17 points, but the 'Birds dropped the 61-49 decision to Hill. Phelps tossed in 13 points in the game and Enchill had 12. David Fernandez had three points, Esau two and Dominik Stewart one.
