Home sales, prices up in area neighborhoods

Home sales in the Bay Area during the month October increased 7.2 percent over the same period last year, according to figures from a La Jolla-based real estate information service.

According to DataQuick Information Services, 4,422 resale houses were sold in the Bay Area's nine counties last month, compared to 4,123 sold during October 1994.

October sales were down from September sales, but company officials said the decline was normal for the season. They said the current sales pace "is a clear reversal of the trend earlier this year when Bay Area sales were off by more than 23 percent."

"This is particularly encouraging because prices are inching up," DataQuick CEO Donald Cohn said. "We attribute the sales increase to a stronger economy and to the low mortgage interest rates."

Figures show that 40,643 resale houses have been sold to date this year in the Bay area, down 16.5 percent from 48,687 for the same period last year.

Santa Clara County saw the median price of a resale home go up from $248,000 last October to $256,000 for October 1995.
