Sunnyvale ranks 2nd in IPO success stories

By R.M. SMITH

A stock market study says Sunnyvale ranks second in the nation for the most successful companies that went public during the last 12 months.

Securities Data Co., the study's author, reports that three other South Bay cities also made the top 10 list of communities whose firms showed the best-performing initial public offerings (IPOs).

Securities Data spokesman Richard Peterson said Mountain View ranked first nationally. San Jose ranked fifth and Santa Clara ranked ninth, he said.

"This study demonstrates the strength of the high-tech community, especially in Silicon Valley," Peterson said.

Nine companies in Sunnyvale had IPOs between Nov. 1, 1994, and Nov. 1, 1995. The average price of stock of those IPOs gained more than 110 percent.

Oak Technology, a semiconductor firm, was the city's best IPO performer with a 276 percent gain. Other Sunnyvale companies that went public during the same time period include: Pinnacle Systems, Orbit Semiconductor, Integrated Silicon Solutions, General Magic, AG Associates, ArcSys, Pure Software and Pharmacyclics.

Securities Data is a Newark, N.J.-based financial database company that analyzes stock market trends for investors.
