    Seddiqui places

All season long, Dawit Gezahgn of Del Mar seems to have been chasing Girmay Guangul of Santa Clara to the cross country finish line.

But Gezahgn wasn't chasing Guangul at the Western Regionals at Mt. Sac in Southern California last weekend--he was catching and passing him by.

Gezahgn raced to an impressive 13th at the Western Regionals, covering the five miles in 16:21 to earn a place in the prestigious top 15.

Only the top eight finishers advance to the national finals set for Dec. 11 in Florida. Gezahgn was 11 seconds off that pace. Jesse McLeod of Susanville was eighth in 16:08.

Homestead's Daniel Seddiqui also ran strong at the Western Regional finals, finishing 82nd in an impressive 17:08.

    Adult sports

The Sunnyvale Recreation Department will sponsor adult basketball and volleyball leagues this winter.

The basketball league features a 10-game season plus playoffs, and the cost is $545 per team, plus $10 for each nonresident.

The volleyball league offers an eight-match season plus playoffs, and the cost is $240 per teams, plus $10 for each non-resident.

The registration deadline for each league is Dec. 10. Call 408.730.7334.

    Softball tryouts

The Blazers have scheduled tryouts for their 14-and-under softball team on Dec. 11, 10 a.m.-noon, at Homestead High School. Call 408.737.1618.
