Cancer Society shop is a good addition

I am thrilled and encouraged to discover the New American Cancer Society's Discover Shop that opened in Sunnyvale. The shop is purposeful and brilliant to add to our community. I am excited to now find that donations can be given to this shop to help raise funds for further research for cancer.

My mother suffered from Hodgkin's disease in 1993. My mother's cancer was extremely severe and far along in its stage. Not only was it a struggle to cure, but it always was tough to get through all the hardships. My mother first went through chemotherapy, but that did not work. The battle was not over and my mother began to lose hope and courage. On the second and final try, she tried radiation treatments. She used radiation for three additional months. Eventually, the battle was over for my mother and the cancer was gone. If the shop had been in our community during this time of need, then my mother could have volunteered some time during the week to get her mind off her problems.

There are several individuals who are suffering from this disease and with this new shop they can realize other individuals care.

In the article, Noel, the shop owner, said, "Research showed that 1997 was the first year decrease in cancer rate was recorded nationwide." This is hope for every individual out there suffering from any form of cancer.

I encourage the process of these shops to continue and hope others will have the generosity to continue to give to these shops.

Turn down the commercials, please!

Sponsors are wasting their money on commercials that break television viewers' eardrums.

Nothing is more irritating than a loud commercial while watching TV shows.

Since viewers can't get the engineers responsible, we have another choice: boycott the products of the sponsors for being so dumb to sponsor such obscenely loud commercials.
