Crab feed on tap for local service clubs next week
Last year the big crab feed sponsored by two local service clubs was such a success, members are getting ready to crack some shells again in the name of charity.
The Sunnyvale Sunrise Rotary Club and the Cupertino De Anza Lions Club are co-sponsoring the Christmas Charity Crab Feed on Dec. 19 at the Santa Clara Valley Blind Center, 101 N. Bascom Ave., San Jose. There will be two sittings, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Members from each club will prepare and serve the all-you-can-eat dinner, and a live Dixieland band called the Toot Sweet will play throughout the evening.
Tickets are $25 each. For more information, call Jim Gould of the Lions Club at 988-8251, or Bill Miller of Rotary at 245-8030.
Lakewood Village throws annual holiday parade
Santa Claus has been coming to Sunnyvale for many years, but for the seventh year in a row, he will make a special early appearance at the annual Lakewood Village holiday parade.
The unique parade that features everyone from Fred Flintstone to councilmember Fred Fowler and wife Phyllis--who happens to be the grand marshal for the third consecutive year--will take place Dec. 12 at 11 a.m.
The route will start at Lakewood Elementary School and weave its way eastward to Fairwood Park, where lunch will be provided for all who attend.
"I'm very excited about the great community of this event," said Mariane Snook, parade organizer. "Each year, more and more people come to watch or participate," she said.
This year, Snook estimated 500 people will take part in the parade festivities.
"It's been quite a bit work," Snook said, "but a lot of fun. There's been a real sense of community. Everybody wants to help, and everybody is interested to make it the best they can."
Public access station, resident win top awards
De Anza College's Cupertino Community Television, a local public access station, won 12 Western Access Video Excellence (WAVE) awards at the 1998 Alliance for Community Media Regional Conference.
The station, shown on TCI cable channels 26 and 38A in Cupertino, won five first-place spots and seven finalist awards. Sunnyvale resident Don Yeager, of Able Cable Productions, walked away with two first-place awards for "On the Move: Dreams Do Come True" and "On the Move Tours Alaska." "On the Move" is a program addressing the issues faced by physically challenged people in the Bay Area.
Part-time De Anza instructor and elementary school teacher Andrew T. Willyoung won first place for What's Up Wit' Kids Chat. The show featured his students discussing social issues and alternative lifestyles.
Other first-place winners are the Indian Vegetarian Gourmet, hosted by Cupertino resident Hema Kundargi, and Four Student Video Projects, produced by Deborah Vanni, a Monta Vista High School teacher.
