Public welcome to council workshop

The Sunnyvale City Council will hold its annual legislative workshop Dec. 12 at 8 a.m. in the council chambers. The City Council will rank more than 80 issues, some of which will be studied in 1997. About 30 of the issues are recurring, such as the city's budget and evaluations of the city manager and city attorney, said David Vossbrink, the city's community relations officer. The council ranks issues by department.

The public is welcome to attend the workshop.

NASA-Ames wins clean-air contest

Air-quality officials in San Francisco named NASA-Ames as a recipient of a "Spare the Air"' award.

The competition, which awards groups that encourage non-polluting activities on days when high ozone levels are predicted, is sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Other winners this year were the Hewlett Packard, the GAP, Neo-post and the Association for Commuter Transportation.

NASA-Ames and Hewlett-Packard came away with awards for best overall program. At NASA's facility at Moffett Field, 185 employees commute by bicycle, at least in part due to a safe bicycle route opened to encourage non-auto commuting.

City forms task force on youth

The Sunnyvale City Council voted 5-2 Nov. 26 to form a joint task force to work on issues affecting youth and their families.

Councilmembers Jack Walker and Landon Noll opposed forming such a group.

The group will be made up of members of the city's already established boards and commissions, as well as members of the community, said Jim Webb, an administrative assistant in the city manager's office.

Details, such as who will be chosen for the committee and how, have yet to be ironed out. Webb should have a report ready for the council to review before April 1997.
