The Sunnyvale Sun receives honors
The Sunnyvale Sun was honored by the California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners at the organization's recent convention in Long Beach.
In presenting the award for Outstanding Media Coverage or Service to Libraries, CALTAC Awards Chairperson Jean Nix of Sunnyvale noted that The Sun has been instrumental in raising community awareness of the Sunnyvale Public Library.
"The Sun has been very supportive of the library and publishes many articles about events, staff and volunteers," wrote Robert Harms, a member of the library's board of trustees, who nominated the paper. "It is encouraging to find a local paper that supports and encourages readers to participate in events at the library."
CALTAC is a membership organization providing resources, education and assistance to library trustees and commissioners to help them carry out their duties and responsibilities toward providing effective library services. CALTAC helps unify library action in the state by cooperating with the California Library Association and the California State Library.

Cupertino Middle School raises $1,500 in pennies
One hundred fifty thousand pennies for your thoughts? Cupertino Middle school children raised that amount during last year's annual Pennies for the Planet program, which turns environmental education into environmental action. The nationwide program, which began in 1994, supports conservation projects around the world. The middle school, located in Sunnyvale students held a competition to see which homeroom class could raise the most money, and the school was treated to a Bio-diversity Bash on Nov. 7 sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund.
