Six champs lead Fremont to title at Andree
By Dick Sparrer
The late Ray Andree never coached wrestling at Westmont High School.
Still, the veteran coach was well known around that Campbell campus after a long and illustrious career as a football and wrestling coach at Camden, Branham and Del Mar high schools.
So when Ron Scadina signed on as the head wrestling coach at Westmont, it made perfect sense to him to honor his former high school coach.
Andree passed away a few years ago, and to honor his memory Scadina has set up a scholarship and tournament in his name.
The annual Ray Andree Memorial Tournament was held on the first day of December and kicked off the 2001-02 high school wrestling tournament in the area.
"It's a memorial tournament created to fund our scholarships and honor Coach Andree," said Scadina, who wrestled for the veteran coach as a prepster at Del Mar.
And Scadina's Warriors would have made Andree proud with their performance in the Saturday tourney.
Two Westmont wrestlers won individual titles and three made it to the finals to lead the Warriors to a team fifth in the 22-team tourney.
But it was Fremont and Cupertino who dominated the tournament. Six Firebirds won titles to pace Fremont to the team championship and Cupertino put five wrestlers in the finals as the Pioneers nailed a team second.
Individual champs Chris Osian, John Seo, Alvin Cacdac, Gilbert Sanchez, Luke Tran and Daniel Atondo helped the Firebirds run up 277 team points to take the tourney crown.
Jaime Meja-Baker topped a list of five Pioneers to reach the finals. Cupertino finished a solid second overall with 246 points and Mitty was third at 217.
Sanchez won by fall just over a minute into the third round to wrap up a title at 145 pounds for the tournament champion Firebirds.
Osian rolled to an 11-4 win in his last match to claim the crown at 119 pounds, and Seo won 9-3 in the finals to win a title at 130.
Cacdac clinched a first with a 14-3 win in the finals at 135, Tran won a tight 4-1 nod to secure the 152-pound title and Atondo claimed a 13-3 win in the championship match at 160.
Meja-Baker led the Cupertino effort with a title-winning performance at 189 pounds. The junior clinched the crown with a 12-4 win in the finals.
Mitch Conley, Kain Ramirez-Baker, David Kullman and Andrew Reese each finished second at the Andree.
Ramirez-Baker lost the 4-1 nod to Fremont's Tran to wind up second at 152, and Kullman lost to Atondo in the finals at 160 pounds. Reese was second at 170 pounds for the Pioneers and Conley finished in the runner-up spot at 112.
Fremont and Cupertino figure to battle it out with Los Gatos for the title in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this winter, and the Firebirds and Pioneers will battle it out in a dual match early in the 2001-02 campaign.
Fremont visits Cupertino for a key league dual on Dec. 13, 6:30 p.m.
