Woman loses an arm in Hwy 85 rollover crash

A Sunnyvale woman lost an arm Dec. 5, after her car rolled over on an embankment along Highway 85 in Cupertino.

The woman was heading northbound on Highway 85 at about 1:30 p.m. when, authorities believe, the car's left rear tire blew out, sending the Toyota Celica out of control and up an embankment between the freeway and the Stevens Creek Boulevard exit ramp.

The accident severed the woman's left arm above the elbow and left her trapped upside-down inside the car until fire crews could free her. The woman, whose name was not available at press time, was treated at the scene by paramedics then airlifted by helicopter to Stanford Hospital.

Santa Clara County Fire Department Batallion Chief Bob Smith said that despite the injuries to her arm, the woman was conscious and alert and showing good vital signs. Smith said the tire that blew out appeared to be a spare.

A spokesperson for the CHP is contacting witnesses and conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident.
