Roadrunners in second place

The Sunnyvale '87 Roadrunners placed second in the girls under-12 Class 1 CYSA District 2 Cup, losing a heartbreaker to the Santa Cruz Panthers in the finals.

The Panthers scored a tie-breaking goal with just 30 seconds left to play to clinch a 2-1 victory in the hard-fought match. The Roadrunners had finished next to last in the District Cup tourney a year earlier.

The Roadrunners are coached by Frank Medina, girls soccer coach at Homestead. Sunnyvale area players on the squad include Elizableth Behlen, Danielle Cifelli, Danielle Contro, Katie Davalos, Sarah Flanagan, April Grolle and Katie Kimure.

Pitching clinic

Former local fast-pitch superstar Whitney Floyd will host lessons and clinics for girls softball pitchers. Floyd starred locally at Lynbrook High School and went on to All-American status at UC-Berkeley. She is currently on the coaching staff at Santa Clara University. Baseball camps

A pair of Stanford holiday baseball camps will be offered.

Hitting, pitching and defensive instruction will be offered over Christmas vacation on Dec. 20-22 and Dec. 27-29.

The camps are open to players ages 13-18, and the cost is $100 per sessions.

Holiday camps

Indoor hitting, pitching and catching camps for baseball players ages 8-22 will be held Dec. 21-31 in San Jose. Players will be grouped in three different levels and will participate two hours per day in the two-day camps. The cost is $59 per player. Pitching program

West Valley Community College pitching coach Burch Boehner will present a winter pitching program Wednesday evenings, Jan. 27-March 10, in the West Valley gym in Saratoga. Players ages 9-10 attend at 7 p.m. and players ages 11-12 attend at 8 p.m.

Preseason arm conditioning, pitching fundamentals, arm care and defensive skills will be covered in the program.
