    Keeping your vehicle protected

The Santa Clara County Regional Auto Theft Task Force is working hard to combat auto theft this holiday season. Besides implementing anti-theft tactics, such as the "bait vehicle," they are giving tips to county residents about how to prevent their vehicles from being stolen.

During the last three months, Santa Clara County has had an increase in the vehicular thefts in such situations as when the vehicle was left unattended and running. Many of the reported thefts occurred when the victims were making a quick purchase at a local convenience store, or attempting to warm up their vehicles in the early morning hours near their residences.

During this holiday season the task force will be cracking down on auto thieves by using a "bait vehicle." The "bait vehicle" is equipped with specialized electronic devices that assist the police in apprehending the auto thief. When the thief enters the vehicle and attempts to drive away, the vehicle's motor will shut down and the doors and windows will automatically lock, resulting in imprisoning the would-be-thief. Investigators assigned to the Regional Auto Theft Task force will then promptly escort the car thief(s) to the Santa Clara County Jail.

The "bait vehicle" will be placed in selected areas within the county where there have been reported high incidences of auto thefts.

The following tips will help reduce your chance of becoming a victim:

    * Never leave your car running without you in it, even if only gone for a minute.

*Always take the key out of the ignition, roll the windows up and lock the doors whenever you park your vehicle.

*Park in high-traffic, well-lit areas, if possible.

*Install an alarm system or locks and devices that deter thefts.

*Always put packages and valuables out of sight or in the trunk.

If your vehicle is stolen, call the police immediately. Quick action by you is essential in recovering your stolen vehicles; any delay in reporting assists the thieves. Stolen vehicles are often used in the commission of another crime. Copy your license plate and vehicle identification (VIN) numbers on a card and keep it with your driver's license. If you recover your own vehicle, notify the police immediately.
