High School Heisman
Ricky Williams of Texas won't be the only athlete walking off with a Heisman Trophy this year. Thanks to the sponsorship of Wendy's, there are also high school Heisman awards presented to top male and female athletes in the country.
Local high school athletes nominated for the coveted national award include Kevin Brown (Bellarmine) and Danielle LeBaron (Presentation) of San Jose, Victoria Doane (Wilcox) of Santa Clara, Alexander Shoor (Saratoga) of Saratoga and Jason Dent (Wilcox), Sueh Han Liew (Fremont) and Frederick Lwee (Fremont) of Sunnyvale.
The award honors the top scholar-citizen-athletes at the high school level.
YMCA basketball
It's time for basketball at the Northwest YMCA, and the organization is looking for players and coaches for the coming season.
Registration is currently under way for boys and girls in grades K-3 who want to learn the basic fundamentals of basketball. The league emphasizes good sportsmanship, fair play and skill development. There are no standings kept, and every player plays at least half a game.
League play runs Jan. 9-March 13 with games on Saturdays and one practice during the week. The cost is $72 per player (a $25 program membership is required).
For more information, call Matt Klock at 257-7160, ext. 19.
