Piles of pennies benefit needy
Students at Cupertino's Garden Gate Elementary School decided to take a different approach to charitable holiday giving this year.
Instead of collecting canned foods, students brought in pennies--55,254 of them.
The money ($552.54) will go to Cupertino Community Services to help needy families, probably by paying bills or buying food, Principal Russ Ottey said.
COC funded for visitor info
Visitors to Sunnyvale will soon have better information about the city.
The City Council is giving as much as $50,000 to the Chamber of Commerce to better inform visitors of what there is to do in Sunnyvale.
This will come as a one-time "seed funding" to get the Chamber's program off the ground.
As the Chamber's director, Suzi Blackman, said to the council, "We want to promote the city as not only a great place to do business, but also [a place where visitors] should eat, sleep and shop."
The Chamber hopes to "maximize travel dollars," mainly from business people visiting the area.
Among the ways it will do that are with a new Chamber of Commerce Web site, dining and entertainment guides distributed to area hotels and perhaps eventually a kiosk where people can pick up information.
