Baseball sign-ups
"Oh, the weather outside is frightful..." or so the song goes.
But while it may be a bit wet and a little cold out, it is the time of year for youngsters and their parents to start thinking about the upcoming youth baseball season. In fact, sign-ups are coming up soon in local leagues:
Sunnyvale Metro Little League-- Sign-ups are set for Jan. 3, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and Jan. 6, 7-9 p.m., at the Raynor Park Rec Building, 1565 Quail Ave.; Jan. 4, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and Jan. 13, 7-9 p.m., at Ponderosa Park, 811 Henderson Ave.; and Jan. 10, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Ortega Park Rec Building, 656 Harrow Way. Sunnvale National Little League-- Sign-ups for players up to age 15 will be held on Jan. 3 and 10, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and Jan. 7 and 14, 6-8 p.m., at the Washington Park Rec Center. For more information, call Robert Rodrigues at 732-5021.
Sunnyvale Serra Little League-- Sign-ups for players up to age 15 will be held on Jan. 10, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Jan. 11, 1-4 p.m., and Jan. 15, 6-9 p.m., at the Serra Park Rec Building, 730 The Dalles. For more information, call 345-9800.
Sunnyvale Southern Little League-- Sign-ups for players up to age 15 will be held Saturdays, Jan. 3-24, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. each day, and Jan. 7 and 13, 7-9 p.m., at the Las Palmas Park Rec Building, Russett and Erie Drive. For more information, call Andy Gonzales at 773-1615 or Walter Lee at 739-6065.
Southern/Serra Juniors-- The Sunnyvale Southern and Serra junior divisions (age 13) will play in combine this season.
De Anza Classic
Top community college women's basketball teams from throughout the state will compete in the De Anza Classic Dec. 27-30, with games to be played at De Anza in Cupertino and at Foothill in Los Altos Hills.
Merced returns to attempt to defend its title in the annual tourney, pointing toward the championship game on Dec. 30 at De Anza.
First round games will be played on Dec. 27 at De Anza (Solano vs. City College of San Francisco, 1 p.m.; Moorpark vs. Merrit, 3 p.m.; Cerritos vs. Merced, 5 p.m.; and De Anza vs. Contra Costa, 7 p.m.) and at Foothill (Sierra vs. Taft, 1 p.m.; Butte vs. Gavilan, 3 p.m.; Delta vs. Lassen, 5 p.m.; and Foothill vs. Cerro Coso, 7 p.m.).
Youth basketball
Sign-ups are now being accepted from boys and girls in the first through eighth grades interested in playing youth basketball this winter.
Players must either live in Sunnyvale or attend Sunnyvale school to be eligible. League play begins in January and the cost is $64 per player.
