Fremont girls first, then third
Lady Birds win at Yerba Buena, third at Cupertino
By Dick Sparrer
When Jason Crutchfield said, "We have very high expectations this season," the Fremont girls basketball coach certainly knew what he was talking about.
The fourth-year Fremont coach considers his club to be a title contender in the rugged De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this winter. And if the Firebirds' performance over the past couple of weeks is any indication, they most certainly will contend for that crown.
The Lady Birds backed up a championship at the Shira-kawa Classic at Yerba Buena in San Jose with a third-place finish in the Cupertino Tournament last week.
Talented 5-foot-8 senior guard Monique Gammon scored in double digits in each of the three games at Cupertino, leading the Firebirds to two wins.
Fremont opened the tourney with a 33-21 win over Leigh, and Gammon led the way with 10 points. She came back with 14 points in a 57-50 loss to Milpitas, then jammed 13 points in a 57-28 win over Mountain View in the third-place game.
Daynelle Parker supported with 10 points in the win over Mountain View that clinched third place. Kristen Kam added nine points, Shade Akanbi hit eight, Josie Wells seven, Sara Harvey six and Leanne Bautista four.
The Firebirds, 8-3 for the year, had opened the tourney with the 33-21 win over Leigh. Gammon led the 'Birds with 10 points. Akanbi hit seven points, Wells six and Parker, Kam, Harvey, Robin Glass and Katrina Ison two each.
Gammon had a three among her 14 points, but the Firebirds lost a 57-50 decision to Milpitas. The Trojans went on to lost to Hillsdale 54-47 in the tournament championship game.
Parker supported with 11 points in the loss and Akanbi added 10. Both Gammon and Akanbi buried a three.
Harvey hit six points, Glass four, Wells three and Kam two.
A week earlier, Fremont pulled out a 48-43 win over Gunderson to clinch the title in the Shirakawa Classic. Gammon buried 18 points and Parker his 15 in the championship win.
Kam and Wells supported with five points apiece, Glass and Ison hit two each and Akanbi had one.
The Lady Birds had moved into the finals with a 39-24 win over James Lick. Gammon led a balanced scoring attack with nine points and Kam and Parker hit eight apiece. Glass added five points, Wells three and Akanbi, Ison and Tiana Stroughter two each.
