Mustangs earn all-league football spots
By Dick Sparrer
Four teams from the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League finished strong enough to wind up in the Central Coast Section football playoffs this past fall.
And all four were well-represented when the league's coaches got together at the season's end to select their all-league squad for 1998.
Topping the list was Tab Perry of Milpitas, who won the league's most valuable player award after leading the Trojans to the division championship. Perry is just a junior.
Claiming first team spots for Homestead were running back Benjamin Mika, offensive lineman Alex Damsgaard, defensive back Jessie Nichols and kicker Jim Kiel.
Los Gatos players claimed three of the league's special player awards. Chris Cavanagh was named the outstanding defensive player, Ryan Sorahan was picked the outstanding offensive back and Austin Neale was tabbed the outstanding defensive lineman.
Wilcox had a couple of players pick up special awards, including Mark Trujillo, outstanding offensive lineman, and Charles Boughton, outstanding offensive player.
Monta Vista's Ryan Mitchell rounded out the list of special award winners. Mitchell was named the De Anza Division's outstanding linebacker.
Monta Vista players earning all-league first team honors were running back Brandon Douglas, defensive back Brian Laatsch, inside linebacker John Lozano and deefensive lineman Kyle Kingsbury.
